Le point de vue du démographeRonaldo, Messi, Mbappé, Haaland: who is the best goalscorer? A demographer's view
Haaland passe premier (1,15 but par match), Ronaldo quatrième (0,63).
At the end of 2025, Cristiano Ronaldo had scored 143 goals for Portugal, Kylian Mbappé 55 for France. Does this mean Ronaldo is almost three times as effective? No: Ronaldo was 40 with 226 caps, Mbappé 27 with 94 caps. Comparing these two totals is like comparing the number of children of a 40-year-old woman and a 27-year-old woman without taking their age into account. Demographers have long avoided this trap with two simple tools: relating events to exposure (here, the number of matches) and comparing at the same age. Applied to Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappé, Haaland and even young Lamine Yamal, they shake up the usual rankings.
1. Goalscorers: total, rate and age
Take nine great international goalscorers, still playing or recently retired, and stop the counters at 31 December 2025 for all of them. The commonly published ranking is by total goals. Figure 1 sets it against rankings corrected according to demographers’ rules.
- Total goals measure a whole career: Ronaldo is first, Haaland last.
- Goals per match relate goals to the number of matches played, just as a rate relates births to an exposed population. Haaland moves to first (1.15 goals per match), Ronaldo to fourth (0.63).
- Goals up to age 25 compare players at the same age, Haaland’s age, the youngest. Ronaldo drops to seventh: 25 goals in 79 caps. At the same age, Mbappé had 46 and Neymar 53.
Classement courant contre classement corrigé : Ronaldo premier au total, Haaland premier par match et à âge égalUsual versus corrected ranking: Ronaldo first in total, Haaland first per match and at the same age
None of these rankings is “the true one”. They answer different questions: who scored the most (the total), who scores most often (the rate), who was the most precocious (age). Ronaldo nicely illustrates the difference between quantum and tempo: a late starter, he scored 118 of his 143 goals after age 25, at 0.80 goals per match. Mbappé is ahead of Ronaldo at the same age, but his career is not over. Judging a 27-year-old on his total is like judging a 27-year-old woman’s fertility on the children she has already had (figure 2). The extreme case is Lamine Yamal: at 18, he already had 23 caps and 6 goals for Spain, whereas at the same age Ronaldo and Messi had not yet scored for their country, and Mbappé had never been called up. Yet with 6 goals in total, he appears in no usual ranking: at 18, only a same-age comparison makes sense. More a winger than a striker, he should also be judged on his assists.
Another common statistic removes penalties, which mostly depend on being the designated taker. In major-tournament finals, up to the end of 2025, 6 of Ronaldo’s 22 goals and 7 of Messi’s 27 were penalties. Without them, Messi (20 goals) is clearly ahead of Ronaldo (16). Haaland has no goals at all in major tournaments: Norway had never qualified before 2026. This is not a lack of talent but a lack of exposure.
Comparer à âge égal : à 25 ans, Mbappé avait 46 buts et Ronaldo 25 ; à 18 ans, Yamal en avait déjà 6Comparing at the same age: at 25, Mbappé had 46 goals and Ronaldo 25; at 18, Yamal already had 6
2. An overall ranking: the composite index
Can these indicators be summarised in a single ranking? Following the model of the Human Development Index, we built a composite index from 0 to 100 combining four dimensions: volume (total goals), efficiency (goals per match), precocity (goals and goals per match up to age 25) and major tournaments (goals excluding penalties). Each dimension counts for a quarter (figure 3 and box).
Ronaldo comes first with 53 points, but Messi (52) and Haaland (50) are close behind: fewer than 4 points separate the top three. Haaland gains six places compared with the usual ranking, and Lewandowski loses five. This podium is fragile: with five equally weighted indicators, Haaland moves to first and Ronaldo to fifth. Only the bottom of the ranking is stable: Lewandowski is last and Suárez eighth whatever the method. An overall ranking thus depends as much on the statistician’s choices as on the players’ performances.
Indice composite : Ronaldo, Messi et Haaland à moins de 4 points les uns des autresComposite index: Ronaldo, Messi and Haaland within 4 points of each other
Note méthodologique : construction de l’indice composite
- Indicateurs.
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 1 | 53,3 | 1 | 5 | 5 |
| Lionel Messi | 2 | 52,0 | 2 | 3 | 2 (ex æquo) |
| Erling Haaland | 9 | 50,0 | 3 | 1 | 2 (ex æquo) |
| Romelu Lukaku | 3 | 44,1 | 4 | 4 | 1 |
| Neymar | 5 | 41,2 | 5 | 2 | 2 (ex æquo) |
| Harry Kane | 6 | 31,8 | 6 | 7 | 6 |
| Kylian Mbappé | 8 | 30,5 | 7 | 6 | 7 |
| Luis Suárez | 7 | 28,5 | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| Robert Lewandowski | 4 | 19,0 | 9 | 9 | 9 |
Limites.
Methodological note: building the composite index
- Indicators. The five indicators of figure 1 (total goals, goals per match, goals up to age 25, goals per match up to age 25, major-tournament goals excluding penalties), for the nine scorers, as of 31 December 2025.
- Normalisation. Each indicator is rescaled from 0 to 100: score = 100 × (value − minimum) / (maximum − minimum). The best of the nine gets 100, the lowest 0. This is the method of UNDP’s Human Development Index.
- Dimensions and weights. Four dimensions, each weighing 25%: volume, efficiency, precocity (mean of the two indicators up to age 25) and major tournaments. Grouping the two precocity indicators avoids giving age twice the weight.
- Aggregation. Arithmetic mean of the four dimensions. The geometric mean used by the HDI is not possible here: Haaland scores 0 in major tournaments and Mbappé and Haaland score 0 in volume, which would cancel their index.
- Sensitivity. Two variants: five equally weighted indicators (precocity then weighs 40%) and the mean rank across the five indicators. The table below compares the ranks.
| Player | Usual rank (total goals) | Index (4 dimensions) | Rank on the index | Rank, 5 equally weighted indicators | Rank, mean rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 1 | 53.3 | 1 | 5 | 5 |
| Lionel Messi | 2 | 52.0 | 2 | 3 | 2 (tied) |
| Erling Haaland | 9 | 50.0 | 3 | 1 | 2 (tied) |
| Romelu Lukaku | 3 | 44.1 | 4 | 4 | 1 |
| Neymar | 5 | 41.2 | 5 | 2 | 2 (tied) |
| Harry Kane | 6 | 31.8 | 6 | 7 | 6 |
| Kylian Mbappé | 8 | 30.5 | 7 | 6 | 7 |
| Luis Suárez | 7 | 28.5 | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| Robert Lewandowski | 4 | 19.0 | 9 | 9 | 9 |
Limits. The index is relative: adding or removing a player changes the minimums and maximums, hence the scores. Equal weights are a convention, not a truth. Like the underlying indicators, the index ignores the strength of opponents and minutes played.
3. Teams: wins or wins per match?
Same mistake for teams: wins or titles are compared without accounting for the number of matches or tournaments played. For each of the four major competitions, figure 4 sets the usual ranking (by number of wins or titles) against a corrected ranking, for the ten teams with the most wins.
- World Cup (1930-2026). Brazil has the most wins (79), but also the most matches (119). Per match it stays first (2.16 points), but the Netherlands move from 8th to 3rd, without a single title. Relative to tournaments played, Italy (4 titles in 18 editions) edges ahead of Brazil (5 in 23).
- Africa Cup of Nations (1957-2026). Egypt has the most wins (64) and titles (7), but Nigeria earns more points per match (1.92 versus 1.85). DR Congo, 11th on wins (23 in 84 matches), rises to the level of Algeria and Morocco in titles per tournament (2 in 21 editions, or 10%).
- Euro (1960-2024). Germany has the most wins (30), but Spain is first per match (1.87 points) and per tournament (4 titles in 12 editions, or 33%).
- Copa América (1916-2024). Argentina dominates with or without standardisation (2.11 points per match). Chile, 4th on wins, drops to 8th per match: it played a lot but lost more often than it won (88 defeats for 66 wins).
Classement courant contre classement corrigé : rapportés aux matchs joués, les classements changent dans les quatre compétitionsUsual versus corrected ranking: relative to matches played, rankings change in all four competitions
Note méthodologique
4. What these indicators do not correct
Finer statistics, such as goals per 90 minutes, assists or expected goals (xG), use a better denominator than the match: the time actually played, just as demographers prefer person-years to persons. Unfortunately, they are not freely and completely published for whole careers.
A goal against a minnow counts as much as a goal in a World Cup final: these rates ignore the strength of opponents, and a rate based on few matches, like Haaland’s (48 matches), remains fragile. But the basic rule holds for football as for demography: before comparing two figures, ask over how many matches and at what age.
Methodological note
Players: caps and goals for the senior national team by calendar year, from Wikipedia’s “International” tables accessed on 21 October 2026, stopped at 31 December 2025 so that all players share the same end date; age is the age reached during the year. Nine scorers for whom this yearly detail is published. Teams: all World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, Euro and Copa América finals matches in the international_results database (updated October 2026). Titles: official confederation records.
